Aspen's T-Lazy 7 Ranch Hosts Disabled Vets for 28th Year
|
U.S. Navy veteran Joseph Bailey Jr. wrestled his helmet off in a snow-covered meadow at T Lazy 7 Ranch outside of Aspen on Thursday morning and recounted with a grin the exhilaration of his snowmobile ride. He was stuck in the back of a line of about 10 snowmobiles due to a timid driver right in front of him. But he stayed calm and goosed the throttle when there was a clear passing opportunity on Maroon Creek Road. His sled threw a rooster tail as its track dug into the soft snow. “The rest of the group was nowhere in sight when I started out and I just kept going,” Bailey said. “It was good to have the speed and the space.”

Another Ski Season, Another Closing Day Blowout |
The sun was high and, per usual, so was much of the crowd during Sunday’s closing-day festivities at Aspen Highlands. The scene was a little different compared with previous years, with a $20 fee to gain entry to the fenced-in party area at the base of the ski area. There, DJs entertained the crowd, revelers showed off their costumes and dance moves, and libations flowed at a price. But the base wasn’t the only hotspot at Highlands. There were many reports of a “rager” in the bowl area; Merry-Go-Round restaurant and bar had its own brand of revelry, including a mechanical bull, up until the time of lift closures.

Basalt Unearths Rustic Relic from Railroad Past |
An interesting relic of Basalt’s railroad history was uncovered during the Midland Avenue Streetscape project earlier this month. A crew from Stutsman Gerbaz Earthmoving uncovered rails used by the Colorado Midland Railroad while digging up Midland Avenue near its intersection with Midland Spur on March 20. Basalt Town Engineer Catherine Christoff said two sections of track at an estimated 15 feet each and two pieces estimated at 8 feet each were unearthed. “This is by far the most significant finding that we’ve come across,” Christoff said. The rail lines were connected in town on Nov. 5, 1887.
